Letters to Monique

2009-2010

Letters sent to women sharing the same name, found in the public phone book. Every woman received the same ambiguous letter, looking for a grandmother. The responses were diverse: from the wrong address notice to the condoleances letter, from the brief memo to detailed confidence. An attempt to reconcile with absence, this project looks for a way to materialize the creation of relations through imagination. Through the absurdity of connecting with a woman only because of a shared name, the experiment is a call for going past the limits of reality and find meaning for impossible dreams.

Presented in More Often Than Always, Less Often Than Never, collective exhibition curated by Noxious Sector. Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond, BC, 2010.
