Fleurs coupées
with Sara A.Tremblay
2023-

Fleurs coupées (Cut flowers) embodies a friendship that manifests itself in images, where several fundamental themes bring the two artists together, notably in the similarity of their family experiences, their health and self-perception issues, and their choice to live in the countryside. As well as bringing together images from their personal archives that show strong connections formally or in sensibility, they also produced self-portraits as a duo, initially in reference to the history of women’s work in gardens. These self-portraits have become a kind of radical performative action that they were already doing intuitively without realizing it, and that they now take on as a form of ritual in both artmaking and friendship.
The project thus deals with questions of friendship and chosen sisterhood. Cutting flowers can be perceived as a violent gesture—we cut off the life of a flower to make a bouquet—whereas in reality cutting flowers can also stimulate the plant. In this way, the project questions what attracts us, what hurts us, and what transforms us.
