“Archipel is a photographic collection of minerals. More specifically, it consists of sixty-one photographs of geological specimens as unique as they are cohesive. As the part stands for the whole, a rock once was a mountain, a natural monument, and will become a nomadic grain of sand going along the shores. Subject to natural forces and to the contingencies of history, this mutability is represented by a simultaneous effect of transparency and movement. By creating a veil over the images, this slight visual shift challenges our perception that stones are immutable. And yet, should we not know that their history is also our history?” —Nathalie Bachand, curator (translated from the French)
